Message from Dave Sharp

Today my group, the American Hot Club Band, released an anti-war song, False Prophets, which is being distributed nationally through an independent CD distributor known as CD Baby. Those of you with high-speed modems can listen for free to False Prophets and two other original tunes in MP3 format (see hyperlinks below). But for those people without the luxury of high-speed Internet access, False Prophets can be purchased from CD Baby by clicking here:

Many of our originals have that soulful Bryds/Tom Petty feel with close vocal harmonies and jangly guitars. Like many 60's bands, our songs reflect the times. Sometimes introspective, sometimes commenting on the Iraq War, but always musical.

You will notice that I wrote False Prophets, but I cannot take credit for the lyrics; they are an adaptation of the words of Jesus of Nazareth extracted from the Gospel of Matthew. I do not consider False Prophets a particularly religious song because the words are very wise regardless of one's faith. (See lyrics.) The message is to judge people by their deeds, not by their words, and not to be misled by people of influence simply because they tell us what we want to hear. The song was inspired by people who claim to be Christians, but endorse virtually any war launched by the government under which they live, for virtually any reason. Such people often say we should support the troops, and there's nothing wrong with that. But few people, except Jesus, say to support the peacemakers. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God." Unfortunately, that isn't a popular sentiment in America these days. We should not allow leaders (or false prophets) to trick us into going to war needlessly by presenting us with clever words and slick slogans, or claiming that waging war is a Christian act. I can think of no higher form of blasphemy.
